About clinic

The Pediatric Clinic is due to the number of beds (79) and ambulatory care one of the largest pediatric clinics in Prague. It provides the special care on all the levels (resuscitation, intensive, basic, rehabilitation and others) for all the age groups of children. Consulting the problems in various fields of pediatrics (for teenagers as well) is naturally part of our care. Most of our patients are in the ambulatory care, more difficult therapeutic and diagnostic performances (infuses, transfuses, various tests and diagnostic instrumental examinations) are pursued within several hours in our ambulatory department.

The Pediatric Clinic originated in 1992 when two clinics (3rd and 4th) – both parts of the First Medical Faculty of the Charles University – were connected. In 1996 the clinic moved from the original spaces into the newly reconstructed pavilion, which forms only one part of the whole pediatric grounds in Karlov. We can say, that this complex ranks among the most up-to-date constructed institutions for sick children in Prague.

Our clinic provides the care of patients from the premature newborn age until the age when teenagers are joining the working process. Nearly half of our patients come not from Prague, these patients are taken on requests of local doctors, pediatricians from the ambulatory departments or other hospitals. We accept children from certain Prague districts (Prague 1,2 and 4). Majority of smaller children are accepted to our hospital accompanied by their mothers.

One of the most important parts of our clinic there is the Intensive Care Unit with the possibility of providing non-conventional artificial ventilation and extra corporal elimination methods. Other priority of our clinic there is the specialization for children with rheumatic diseases. Another important part of our specialization there is the diagnostics and treatment of congenital diseases of metabolism (the clinic is the centre for the treatment of Gaucher disease for the whole country) connected with the research especially in the area of mitochondrial disorders. Not less important there is the care of patients with rheumatic diseases, illness of intestinal tract including problems with nutrition, diagnostic and therapy of congenital uropatia (in cooperation with the Urological Clinic of the First Medical Faculty and the Faculty Hospital). In the frame of medical and research work we deal with the care of matures. The whole care is a complex treatment including the work of kindergarten and primary school in the hospital.

Standby duty is provided by four doctors – in the Intensive Care Unit, standard department (a doctor at the same time provides the services for other departments of the hospital), ambulatory care centre and a doctor for standby for pathological newborns. The clinic works 24 hours during the whole year and at present it has three bed departments (Intensive Care Unit, infant department with a metabolic unit, department for children and teenagers – altogether 79 beds) and ambulatory section.

Next to the medical care we are engaged also in teaching activity – for students of medical secondary schools, bachelors, medical students from faculties and postgraduate studies, as well. Our clinic is the basis of the First Medical Faculty of the Charles University, but it participates also in the activity of the Postgraduate studies and further education of doctors. Another part of our activity there is a research, publication and grant work, which ranks among the best workplaces of the First Medical Faculty of the Charles University.

In the grounds of our clinic there is situated the Institute of metabolic congenital diseases and couple of other departments – children’s gynaecology, surgery, neurology, psychology, genetics and rehabilitation, too. We have here also the laboratory of haematology, clinical biochemistry, radio diagnostics and microbiological department of the Faculty Hospital with the antibiotic section. Faculty pharmacy is here at disposal.

The Intensive Care Unit provides in the cooperation with the transportation service Pragomedica transportation service for pathological newborns not only in Prague but in the whole Central Bohemian region. Ambulance car has top-class equipment for this need and it is available all the time in our grounds. It is possible to transport a patient any time to the clinic accompanied by a doctor and nurse.

The activity of the Pediatric Clinic is supported by Švejcar foundation – Karlov.
